High
Performance Conductive Paint Resists Abrasion
.....A
manufacturer of cellular telephones needed to metallize the
plastic housing on its newest handset to provides adequate shielding
of EMI emissions. The solution needed to be low-cost, easily
applied and resistant to abrasion encountered during assembly
and handling. |

.....
The lowest cost approach to metallizing the housing turned
out to be a conductive coating, applied using an HVLP (high
volume/low pressure) spray system. Chomerics provided its
high performance CHO-SHIELD ® 2052 coating, consisting
of silver-plated-copper particles in a single-component acrylic
resin. The coating was supplied ready-to-spray, with no requirement
for thinning.
..........The
CHO-SHIELD 2052 coating has demonstrated superior abrasion resistance
compared to other commercially available conductive paints,
based on ASTM D4060 (Tabor) Abrasion testing. (Results of this,
and other comparative physical tests, appear in Test Report
CHO-TR41, available from Chomerics.) |
.....The
cell phone manufacturer was able to shield the plastic enclosure
using CHO-SHIELD 2052 paint in an inexpensive, automated application
process. This system also provided the option to add a form-in-place
conductive elastomer EMI gasket dispensing process in-line
with the robotic coating.

CHO-SHIELD 2052 Technical
Bulletin.
