Springfingers Ground Handset Boards |
|
|
|
|
.....A
telecom manufacturer needed a new system for grounding a pair
of circuit boards inside a PCS phone. In the original design,
the grounding path was provided using a tab of conductive fabric-wrapped
foam. This tab was installed on the top of a metal can soldered
onto one PCB. In the assembled phone, this tab mated with conductive
traces on the other board. As a result, the two boards were
effectively grounded together, and, in turn, could be grounded
to the phone housing. |
|
|
|
...A
problem occurred when the foam-core grounding tabs were tightly
compressed. The tabs took a compression set, which affected
their electrical connectivity to the circuit boards. A new solution
must compress easily and not lose resiliency in the assembled
housing. It needed to provide equal or better conductive properties
to the fabric/foam tab. And, it must install as quickly and
easily as the original system.
.....To
meet these needs, Chomerics provided peel-and-stick, metal spring
fingers. The thin (.002 inch) metal tabs compress under soft
forces, while their spring-like properties keep them in tight
contact with both PCBs. These SPRINGLINE gaskets are made from
beryllium-copper, tin-plated for galvanic resistance.

.....The
spring fingers were supplied on film rolls from which individual
parts are easily peeled and stuck into place. Each finger has
a strong pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) strip on its mounting
surface. The spring fingers were priced the same as the fabric-over-foam
tabs they replaced. |
