CATV
Manufacturer Springs for New Shielding Method
.....A
telecommunications manufacturer needed a low-cost EMI gasket for perimeter
shielding of an outdoor-mounted CATV amplifier. The amplifier housing
parts were made from cast metal. Integral screws along the flanges
held the parts together. The shielding gasket needed to be highly
resilient under the strong compressive forces of this enclosure. Lead-time
for a gasket solution was less than two weeks for ten thousand parts.
| .....Using
a new wire and knitting technique, Chomerics produced a SPRINGMESH
® EMI gasket, which provides the resilience of wire mesh
over an elastomer core, but without the bulk or expense of a
core. The SPRINGMESH gasket consisted of a 0.004 inch (0.10
mm) diameter tin-plated steel spring wire knitted into a hollow
cylinder. When mounted in a groove in the metal housing, the
gasket provided effective shielding performance over a wide
deflection range. Up to 90% compression could be achieved, with
a resulting compression set below 30%. |

Chomerics
was able to deliver the SPRINGMESH gaskets in two weeks' time. This
rapid turnaround was in part due to Chomerics' unique quick-cut
technology for automated cutting and termination of custom strips
with non-fraying ends.
.....SPRINGMESH EMI gasket diameters
range from 0.093 inch (2.36 mm) to 0.375 inch (9.53 mm). Applications
for groove-mounted SPRINGMESH gaskets include NEMA enclosures and
cast metal housings for outdoor CATB passive devices and amplifiers,
(with outboard environmental seals), and other cast and sheet metal
enclosures.
